Ashley Young has long had a reputation for going down too easy inside the box and trying to con officials into awarding penalty kicks.
Allegations of diving were levelled at the former Manchester United winger turned full-back throughout his career.
Ashley Young was criticised in some quarters over his involvement in penalty decisions that favoured United after joining the club from Aston Villa back in 2011 for a fee of £17million.
He won five trophies during his time at Old Trafford, including Sir Alex Ferguson’s final-ever Premier League title two years after joining the club. Young also won the FA Cup and Europa League before being appointed club captain in 2019.
Young worked with multiple managers during his time at United, but few defended him against abuse like Ferguson.

Sir Alex Ferguson spoke with Ashley Young about diving
During Young’s debut season at Young, the allegations came thick and fast against the former Watford attacker.
It brought so much attention his way that Ferguson had to step in and address the matter.
“I’ve had a word with Ashley,” Ferguson said at the time, as quoted by BBC Sport. “He understands where we come from and I hope it makes a difference.”
There was an overreaction because Young played for United, even if he did overdo his falling theatrics at times.
Young also had a reputation for being a reliable hard worker during his time at United and he once attended a game in the away end, albeit in disguise.
Premier League release statement
The Premier League has addressed VAR’s controversial decision to deny Everton a late penalty against United.
A statement read, as per The Sun: “VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review.
“The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with an indirect free-kick.”
There appears to be a weekly VAR incident but at least they got it right this weekend.
