Man United could pocket millions in major PSR boost as £33m former star becomes a top target

Manchester United’s poor finances could ruin transfer plans in the upcoming summer window.

Ineos are planning an overhaul this summer and are ready to back Ruben Amorim with new signings.

However, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has confirmed that United have already spent £89m before the window has even begun, and the club’s poor finances mean that spending could be limited by the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.

United fans criticised ticket price rises this week after Ineos confirmed an increase to season ticket costs. It is one of several controversial money-raising methods implemented by the new owners.

Selling players is one way United will look to raise money this summer. A £40m buy option for Marcus Rashford will generate a big boost for PSR.

Atletico Madrid could beat Man United to Alvaro Fernandez

Last summer, United sold Alvaro Fernandez for just £5m to Benfica after he spent a stint on loan at the Portuguese club.

Fernandez now has a £33m release clause (€42m) at Benfica, although United have a buy-back clause for Alvaro Fernandez worth £15m.

Amorim and United considered re-signing Fernandez, but he wasn’t overly keen on moving back to Old Trafford. Instead, Patrick Dorgu was signed in January to solve Amorim’s left wing-back issues.

Now, Portuguese outlet O Jogo reports that Fernandez has become a top target for Atletico Madrid. He is also admired by Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Manager Diego Simeone reportedly sees Fernandez as a player “for the next decade” and Atletico are preparing a big summer offer.

Man United could earn millions from Alvaro Fernandez clause

It seems United can be ruled out of the race for Fernandez, especially if they are unable to qualify for the Champions League this season.

While they were unable to take advantage of the £15m buy-back clause in Fernandez’s contract, there is another clause that could earn the clubs millions.

As reported by TeamTalk, there is a sell-on clause attached to deal that saw Fernandez leave United for Benfica.

While the size of the sell-on clause is not specified, it means that United should be in line for a significant payout if Atletico Madrid pursue a summer deal.

Given that Fernandez came through United’s academy, any money received would be pure profit which would be a major boost to PSR figures.
