Bruno Fernandes will go down as one of the best Manchester United signings since Sir Alex Ferguson, perhaps even the very best.
A chequered transfer history over the past 12 years means there have been more misses than hits in Manchester United’s recruitment.
One shining light was a transfer struck in 2020, the deal to bring Bruno Fernandes to the club from Sporting.
Now a four-time Manchester United player of the year, Fernandes keeps on setting individual milestones, including scoring his 100th goal for the club.

One of four midfielders to score 100 goals for Manchester United
Bruno Fernandes has done incredibly well to reach 100 goals for the club, completing his century with a strike from open play against Chelsea in a 2-1 victory.
Fernandes now ranks joint 21st all-time in the Manchester United goalscoring list, level on 100 goals with Joe Cassidy and George Wall – who both represented the club before World War One.
The Portuguese star has managed what Bryan Robson didn’t, with ‘Captain Marvel’ agonisingly stuck on 99 goals.
Fernandes is among an elite group, as one of four midfielders to score 100 goals during their Manchester United careers.
- Sir Bobby Charlton: 249 goals in 758 games
- Ryan Giggs: 168 goals in 963 games
- Paul Scholes: 155 goals in 718 games
Fernandes’ current numbers are 100 goals in 296 games. He is scoring at a faster pace than any of the three United legends.
The one major difference is the achievements of Charlton, Giggs and Scholes, who each won multiple league titles and at least one European Cup.
Nonetheless it is incredible company for Fernandes to be in, and puts his performances and goal input into context, to be doing it in a struggling Manchester United team.
Fernandes closing in on 300 appearance milestone
Fernandes is currently just four games away from the milestone 300 appearances-mark for the club, which he is set to reach in early October.
Aside from on loan Marcus Rashford, who has 426 appearances, Bruno Fernandes has played more games for the club than anybody in the Red Devils’ squad.
This includes longest-serving player Luke Shaw, who signed for United six years earlier, who has 292 appearances to Fernandes’ 296.
