Elliot Anderson can succeed on Man Utd audition, one week after Carlos Baleba failed - Opinion

Manchester United are currently considering potential midfielder signings for 2026, and Elliot Anderson is among the best possible additions.

The midfield pairing of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro has spurred Manchester United to a three-game win streak; however, it isn’t a sustainable solution.

Ruben Amorim wants his midfielders to be athletic and all action, and neither of the two legends are capable of being that long term, due to age and also the fact that both are potentially set to exit next summer.

This has resulted in several options being linked, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and also Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Last weekend, Baleba was poor against United in a 4-2 defeat, while this weekend it is Anderson’s chance to impress.

Elliot Anderson could become Manchester United’s number one midfield choice

So, with Baleba failing his audition, which was the latest poor outing in a long line of bad performances by the Cameroon international, there is a serious opportunity for Anderson to establish himself as the best possible option for the Red Devils.

Anderson is sure to start for Nottingham Forest, who have lost four Premier League games on the bounce, despite recently appointing one-time Amorim critic Sean Dyche as their manager.

It will be at the City Ground, which gives Forest an edge with United not as successful away from home under Amorim, and at the centre of their chances will be Anderson.

Despite his team being rubbish this season, Anderson has been a shining light, playing every game and putting in top-class performances.

If he lines up against United and bosses the game, he may just move into the forefront of midfield planning, with it likely to win over Amorim in particular, as the head coach has a front row seat.

Every midfielder Manchester United have been seriously linked with

United have been linked with several midfielders ahead of a possible overhaul of the position in 2026. After the success with recruitment in summer 2025, United could be looking to stick with Premier League proven.

This explains the links to multiple Premier League midfielders.

Anderson has been a new target for United over the last few weeks as he goes from strength to strength for Forest. Meanwhile, Baleba was wanted by United in 2025, and logical thinking suggested this would continue in 2026.

Adam Wharton is another United target, but the players linked go beyond just domestic.

United hold a serious link in signing Angelo Stiller from Stuttgart. Meanwhile, there is also interest in Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, in a deal which would replicate the coup to sign Leny Yoro back in 2024.

Breno Bidon from Corinthians has been linked with United, although this would be more of a high-potential signing than one for right now.
