Diego Costa compares one of Manchester United’s latest signings to Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba.
Manchester United are fifth in the Premier League and have some of their new signings to thank for keeping them in contention for a Champions League spot following a topsy-turvy first half to the 2025/26 campaign.
Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha have both made positive contributions since joining the club, which was to be expected as they both had Premier League experience under their belt before arriving at Old Trafford.
Man Utd should pay _____ to sign Cole Palmer if he becomes available from Chelsea
Fill in the blank! How much is Cole Palmer worth?
That wasn’t the case for Benjamin Sesko or Senne Lammens, while Diego Leon has yet to feature for United’s first team following his move from Cerro Porteno.
It’s obviously early days in each of these players’ United careers, but there are signs that recruitment has improved since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner and Ineos took control of football operations.
United are still reliant on club captain Bruno Fernandes, although he is likely to play a more advanced role under Michael Carrick after being positioned deeper in midfield under Ruben Amorim.

Diego Costa compares Man Utd’s Bryan Mbeumo to Didier Drogba
Mbeumo has been a standout performer for United since his summer move from Brentford, leading to comparisons to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba following a bright start to life at Old Trafford.
The 26-year-old has found the net eight times this season, with his latest goal coming in United’s 2-0 win over Man City on Saturday.
It was the first goal United scored since the return of Carrick, inspiring an unexpected victory over Pep Guardiola’s side.
The Cameroon international has become United’s main attacking threat so far this season and is receiving considerable acclaim from former Premier League figures due to the instant influence he has had on the team.
Former Chelsea goalscorer Costa is the latest to highlight that United signed a special player in the summer.
When asked which striker in the Premier League resembles Costa and Drogba, the former Spain international told John Obi Mikel: “The guy from Man Utd, from Cameroon. Bryan Mbeumo.”
How many goals do you think Bryan Mbeumo will finish with this season? ⚽
This is high praise for Mbeumo, but many United fans will believe their new star can surpass the brilliance shown by those two former Chelsea players.
Didier Drogba’s record against Man Utd
As a key player under Jose Mourinho, during his initial spell at Chelsea, Drogba witnessed one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
The Ivorian striker faced United 21 times in his career and was successful on 10 occasions.
United beat Chelsea in seven of those matches, while the fixture ended in a draw four times.
Drogba scored four goals and registered five assists against United throughout his career.
