Forget Amad, Michael Carrick is unleashing Bryan Mbeumo’s devastating partnership with another player

Amad was the player Bryan Mbeumo was developing a brilliant partnership with, but Michael Carrick is seeing someone else that he can develop a devastating partnership with.

Bryan Mbeumo had to play a different type of game against Fulham compared to what he did against Arsenal and Man City.

In the absence of space behind the backline, he had to stretch the defence with his running in central areas, away from Amad’s wing.

Since Michael Carrick’s appointment, his partnership with Amad, which was developing under Ruben Amorim, has been paused to an extent, but it has been replaced by another devastating one.

Bryan Mbeumo is loving life ahead of Bruno Fernandes

It is no secret that Bruno Fernandes is a dream attacking midfielder to be playing ahead of, as his vision and sense of space are second to none in world football.

However, Mbeumo, not being a natural striker, had his work cut out for him, as despite his prolific last season, he prefers to cut inside from the right wing.

He’s now having to tussle with the centre-backs and rely on Amad’s work out wide instead of doing it himself, but he’s increasingly making it work to fine effect.

Fernandes’ first-time passes to Mbeumo are a nightmare for defenders to deal with, and their link-up play in close spaces is salivating.

Carrick has noticed this and is determined to let them get better at it with more minutes on the pitch.

He said: “Bryan’s done fantastic. I think him and Bruno have had a really good link-up and obviously the goals have had a big impact for us.

“I think he’s got an eye for goals, Bryan. He’s got… his movement’s really good. He’s a combination player as well as a threat in behind.”

Carrick has answered a big Amad-Mbeumo question

For all the things that didn’t work under Ruben Amorim, his system had a saving grace in that it allowed Amad and Mbeumo to play together.

Both of them prefer to play on the right, from where they can cut inside on their left foot, but neither is a right-back in a back-four setup.

Now that Amad’s wing-back position was gone, Carrick has answered the major question, which was how his two best attackers can be platformed together.

He’s done it brilliantly by unleashing Mbeumo’s running in central areas, with Fernandes the perfect partner for him.

In the meantime, Amad has been unleashed further forward, where his defensive effort is a bonus instead of a necessity.

It’s as simple as putting players in their best positions and providing a platform for their best skills to shine while hiding their weaknesses.

Due to Carrick’s tweak, not only has Mbeumo sustained his output despite playing in a non-natural position, but he has also formed a devastating new partnership with Fernandes.
