Andy Mitten says Man Utd want 'highly rated' talent to develop one trait to reach next level in his promising career

Andy Mitten has revealed that Manchester United hold defender Leny Yoro in high regard and the Red Devils are keen to see him further develop at the club.

Leny Yoro is in his second season at the Premier League side after he left Ligue 1 outfit Lille in 2024 and completed his sensational move to Manchester United.

The 20-year-old French centre-back has experienced a mixed campaign at Old Trafford compared with his debut season following his £52.18m transfer.

Yoro had been met with criticism under Ruben Amorim earlier this season, but the United centre-back has been growing in confidence under Michael Carrick recently.

Andy Mitten explains that Man Utd are looking to eliminate Leny Yoro’s physicality weakness going forward

Leny Yoro has started the Red Devils’ last four Premier League matches under Michael Carrick and saw out the full 90 minutes on each occasion as well.

Manchester United legend Carrick has relied on Yoro to step up and partner with Harry Maguire after defender Lisandro Martinez was sidelined due to an injury.

Yoro has made 28 appearances for United in the 2025-26 season and netted one assist amid questions being raised around his mixed form and physicality.

Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Andy Mitten suggested that United have been keen to see Yoro add an “aggressive” playing style to his overall approach.

“He started the season, I think, as first choice and then [in] October, November, December, he lost his place,” he said.

“And that’s because he was making mistakes.

“I know the club wanted him to be more aggressive and he’s incredibly highly rated. He’s definitely one for the future.”

Andy Mitten opens up on the ‘first impression’ that Leny Yoro made after Man Utd signed him

Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Liverpool were all linked with Yoro before United landed the highly sought-after Frenchman when he was only 18 years old.

Yoro arrived at Old Trafford under the reign of Erik ten Hag, but he missed the opening months of the 2024-25 campaign after a pre-season injury he suffered.

Mitten said that Yoro made an immediate first impression on the Red Devils when they made the decision to sign him ahead of the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool.

“I know off the field he’s settled in his private life,” he said.

“I know he made a very good first impression when he started talking to United, the people who were around him.”

United’s 2024 deal to sign Yoro from Lille included a further £6.73m in add-ons on top of the initial transfer fee of £52.18m.
