Manchester United progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday night by defeating Sunderland at Old Trafford, and Godwill Kukonki left the crowd in applause for one particular moment.
Old Trafford played host to an FA Youth Cup classic, with Manchester United beating Sunderland 3-2, coming from behind to do so.
It was an impressive performance, in which United’s young stars proved they can win even with JJ Gabriel failing to score, which is a confidence booster for the rest of this season.
But beyond the attacking quality on display, there were other reasons to be impressed. Godwill Kukonki’s display was one of these reasons.

Godwill Kukonki’s aggression impressed Jonathan Woodgate
The attackers got all the headlines from the game, and rightfully so. While Jim Thwaites’ midfield performance was excellent, it was Kukonki who earned applause from Jonathan Woodgate.
The first-team coach was in the stands alongside Michael Carrick and Steve Holland to watch the youngsters play, with Kukonki impressing.
It was after one particular moment where United had Sunderland contained in their own half, but every time they made a pass on the left flank, Kukonki would jump to try and win the ball.
Despite being second favourite to the ball, his aggression, speed, and power meant he won these duels and kept United in the ascendancy.
One of these was incredible to see as he did so well to win the tackle, which saw the crowd erupt, and this included Woodgate, who I witnessed clapping for Kukonki.
Godwill Kukonki could become Jonathan Woodgate’s new project
Since arriving at the club in January, Woodgate has been hailed for his coaching, as he specifically works with the defenders, leading to praise from Leny Yoro.
Additionally, Harry Maguire hailed Woodgate as being vital for young defenders.
Well, in this case, Kukonki could be the next project for Woodgate. But this might be more in the event that Carrick is appointed permanently, and therefore so is Woodgate.
Woodgate could be key in helping Kukonki go from his current status to a brilliant centre-back, with his transition from left-back already starting with the under-21s.
Kukonki is a brilliant talent, and United need to look at integrating him soon.
