Bendito Mantato became a Manchester United academy graduate in December, but since then, things haven’t been going well for the 18-year-old winger.
It was Ruben Amorim’s penultimate game against Wolves when Bendito Mantato became Manchester United’s 257th academy graduate, but it is his only appearance for the first team to date.
Mantato ranked as the ninth youngest Premier League debutant, and the club clearly believes he has a very bright future, even if he is currently back in the academy plying his trade for both the under-18s and under-21s.
But now, his breakout season has been brought to an emphatic halt as he won’t play this campaign again.
Bendito Mantato campaign ends due to injury
Mantato’s season is over, with the 18-year-old picking up an injury earlier this month, which is expected to be a campaign ender, according to a reliable academy news source, RedYouthUnited.
During the United under-21’s defeat to Chelsea, Mantato picked up an injury which has left him in a protective boot and crutches, and he is now unlikely to play again this season.
Mantato making his debut was a long time coming, with plenty of excitement around him behind the scenes at Old Trafford, as he dominated the lower age groups.
However, this latest injury is now at the top of a long list of setbacks he has faced at United in recent seasons, stunting his development and explaining why he hasn’t been able to hold onto his first-team place.
What next for Bendito Mantato at Manchester United?
Now, Mantato will look to fight his way back to fitness and should have pre-season as his target for a return. During pre-season, there will be plenty of academy involvement with multiple first-team players heading to the World Cup.
Ahead of getting another opportunity with the senior side, Mantato should be working to improve his explosiveness and physicality, which are the main qualities he is going to need to play for United.
He will be hoping to properly breakout next season, and the road to this begins with recovering and maybe even getting a loan move to aid his evolution.
