Manchester United transfer target Mateus Fernandes was in Premier League action for West Ham against Arsenal this weekend.
The Premier League clash between Arsenal and West Ham this weekend had huge implications at both ends of the table.
Manchester United are close to securing third with two games remaining, and while the result didn’t directly impact the Red Devils, it was an opportunity to watch Mateus Fernandes in action.
United have been linked with Fernandes as a midfield option, and he has even been personally recommended by Bruno Fernandes.

Mateus Fernandes performance vs Arsenal
A controversial VAR decision meant that Arsenal beat West Ham 1-0 at the London Stadium. Fernandes played the full 90 minutes for the Hammers, and he didn’t disappoint.
Up against a midfield that included Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Eberechi Eze and Martin Zubimendi, Fernandes went toe-to-toe and was one of the best players on the pitch.
As per FotMob, Fernandes earned a 7.2 rating despite being on the losing side. Only Konstantinos Mavropanos earned a higher rating as a West Ham player.
Mateus Fernandes match stats
- Passes completed: 80% [33/41]
- Duels won: 67% [8/12]
- Defensive contributions: 5
- Chances created: 2
- Successful dribbles: 100% [2/2]
Fernandes was dominant both in and out of possession for West Ham, and he came extremely close to scoring late on when his shot was saved by David Raya.
West Ham don’t want to sell the 21-year-old midfielder, but they now look doomed to relegation which could present United with a bargain opportunity.
While many United fans would have been hoping for a West Ham victory on Sunday to deny Arsenal the title, the result could help Ineos get a transfer deal over the line.
Ex-Man Utd star Aaron Wan-Bissaka headed for relegation
West Ham’s defeat has left them in the relegation zone, a point behind Tottenham who have a game in hand.
Their imminent drop to the Championship means that former United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who completed a £15m move to West Ham back in 2024, is facing the reality of Championship football.

Wan-Bissaka also played the full 90 minutes against Arsenal but he was unable to keep out Leandro Trossard’s winner.
Wan-Bissaka has haunted United whenever he has faced the Red Devils in the last two years, but he is at risk of not making the trip to Old Trafford next season.
