A deeply underrated midfielder in his prime, Michael Carrick was fortunate to enjoy the later stages of Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary reign at Manchester United.
The 45-year-old United legend shared the pitch with world-class talent, including Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand.

Michael Carrick first arrived at Old Trafford from Tottenham in an £18.6m deal and Sir Alex Ferguson’s plan was to use him as Paul Scholes’ main midfield partner.

Ferguson relied on the 51-year-old former Man Utd and England midfielder for a large period of his historic reign at Old Trafford before he retired in 2013.
Carrick insisted that Scholes was not “appreciated as much as he should be” for what he brought to the table for Man Utd during the Ferguson era.
“Scholes is probably the best player I’ve ever played against,” he told Inside United in 2006, as per Manchester United’s official website in 2026.
“He’s such a top player and I don’t think he’s appreciated as much as he should be – I suppose that’s the way he prefers it.
“I’m looking forward to playing with him a lot more, not just in games but in training too.”
