Michael Carrick has placed plenty of trust in the academy this summer at Manchester United, but one talent hasn’t been involved and will currently be watching from the sidelines with frustration.
With the permanent exit of Tyler Fredricson to Lausanne this summer, Manchester United’s centre-back department has required some academy support, coming from Dan Armer throughout the campaign.
Armer played the first few games off the bench before then settling on the bench instead, although he has remained part of the first-team squad for training. This effectively means Armer has taken up the Fredricson role as United’s sixth-choice centre-back.
But there is another wonderkid defender who will be thinking that this should be his place and opportunity to get into the first-team fold.
Jayden Ngwashi could have broken through for Manchester United this summer
Dan Armer has been flawless for United this summer when given the chance to prove his worth, but in terms of academy centre-backs, it is Jayden Ngwashi that many assumed would be getting regular first-team exposure.
However, Ngwashi was injured most of the 2025/26 season, which was a continuation of struggles across the last few seasons, which meant that he failed to feature.
This means he probably wasn’t even on Michael Carrick’s agenda for pre-season, despite how talented and high-potential the 17-year-old is seen to be by United.
It is a shame, because Ngwashi was in first-team training with Ruben Amorim last September and looked set to be fast-tracked through the ranks at United, only for injury to prove fatal to his chances.
Had Ngwashi had a full season, his talent suggests that he would have placed himself as the most exciting centre-back prospect at the club and he therefore would have gotten chances at centre-back or right-back this summer.
Amorim was a big fan of Ngwashi as evidence by his treatment of the teenager, and Carrick will surely also be impressed as he is a Rolls-Royce defender, which has been clear in the limited chances to see him live.
Ngwashi will be hoping that the 2026/27 campaign goes by injury free and that he can begin to make waves for the U18s or U21s over the course of the campaign.
Ngwashi and Godwill Kukonki will both be challenging Dan Armer this season
While Armer as a sixth-choice centre-back sounds as though he won’t play much, it is worth remembering that Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt haven’t exactly been reliable in their fitness.
So he could quite easily end up playing cup games in the coming months, but he will have competition from Ngwashi and Godwill Kukonki, all being well.
Kukonki’s absence this summer has been curious and could suggest his future lies elsewhere not yet signed a professional contract at United despite the stance being that he will sign that deal.
Ideally, Michael Carrick will have these three competing to be in the place of senior players when injured and maybe even in the early cup rounds pending a favourable draw.
Ngwashi could explode onto the scene for United if he just manages to remain fit this season.
