Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has made a controversial call ahead of his reunion with the Red Devils.
One of the many notable aspects of Ruben Amorim’s spell at Manchester United was the way he re-constructed the squad.
Last summer, Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ saw five first team level players axed from the main group and told to train separately. They were all made available for transfer.
Amorim was sacked by United in January 2026 and has since been hired as AC Milan head coach.
Ahead of his reunion with Manchester United in an upcoming friendly, he has decided to wield the axe to his AC Milan squad.

Ruben Amorim has decided that the following seven players will play no part for the team in 2026/27 and has instructed the club to make them all available for transfer.

Fabio Capello unhappy with Ruben Amorim choice
Former England boss and Serie A champion Fabio Capello has expressed his bemusement at Ruben Amorim’s choice to axe Fikayo Tomori.
Speaking to Gazzetta, Capello called out Amorim’s decision: “I thought he would be useful to Amorim in some way.
“Let’s not forget that the Englishman was a starter last season and also played when Milan won the Scudetto and reached the Champions League semi-final.
“Given the defenders currently in the squad, I would have thought carefully before letting the Englishman go.”
The legendary manager believes that Amorim is wrong not to have different styles of defenders in his squad.
He explained: “Amorim wants to play proactive football and keep the defense high, but there are games or moments in matches where you absolutely have to know how to defend even in the 16-yard box.”
He did add that there was one scenario where he would admit that he was wrong and Amorim was right.
“If they tell me that Milan will sign someone like the Nesta of the old days, then I’ll throw my hands up.”
Manchester United’s friendly match with AC Milan could pile more pressure on the Portuguese coach, who is yet to win at all in pre-season at his new club.
