Manchester United and Antony have both been on separate journeys back to the Champions League.
On December 12, 2023, Manchester United were defeated 1-0 by Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. It was a result that confirmed the Red Devils’ elimination.
United have not been back in the Champions League since, until this week. A similar path has been charted by one of the team’s starters that night, Antony.
Antony played 74 minutes of the loss, which came during a disappointing second season for him at United. He started three of the six group games.
Now after a long route, Antony is back in the Champions League with Real Betis.

Antony returns to Champions League
Antony was sent on loan to Real Betis in January 2025. He was grateful to find his new home, away from the attention at Old Trafford where the spotlight was too bright.
His impressive performances in the Conference League saw Betis reach the Final, while they also managed to qualify for the Europa League via their La Liga performances.
Betis then signed Antony on a permanent basis. They reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, while their fourth placed finish in La Liga secured their Champions League spot.
Last night they were in action in their Champions League opener away at Lille, and Antony had a starring role.

Betis won the game 3-2, twice coming from behind via two goals from Marc Bartra and a winner from newly signed striker Troy Parrott.
Antony is playing with the confidence of a player who is enjoying his football, a player who has total freedom to express himself.
This joy for the game was beaten out of him at Old Trafford, whether by pundits, fans, or his manager. He became frightened to take risks.
Now he has earned his way back onto the biggest stage and Antony is embracing the moment, wearing his team’s number seven shirt.
Antony starred vs Real Madrid
The Champions League victory over Lille was only Real Betis’ second biggest win this week.
Antony and Betis secured a shock 1-0 win over Real Madrid at the weekend to inflict Jose Mourinho’s first defeat of the season.
While it was Parrott who scored the winner, Antony was Betis’ best player, performing with the type of creativity which Real’s top stars failed to demonstrate.
Antony was approached for a move to the Turkish Super Lig in the summer, but both club and player rejected the offer. He is too important at Betis, and having tasted an unhappy experience at United, he values the happiness of his current situation. It’s showing on the pitch.
