Noussair Mazraoui inspired Morocco to a 2-0 victory over Gabon in their first African Cup of Nations qualifier of the new campaign.
It has been a poor start to the 2026/27 season for Noussair Mazraoui at Manchester United, but the versatile defender isn’t letting that get in the way of his performances on the international stage.
Mazraoui has made five appearances for United since the beginning of the campaign, with just one of his three starts coming in the Premier League. Michael Carrick will hope that Mazraoui – and other United players – return from the extended international break in better form.
There will certainly be a spring in Mazraoui’s step following a 2-0 win over Gabon. The Moroccan defender was among the top performers on the pitch as the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers kicked off.
Noussair Mazraoui scores long-range strike in Gabon win
Morocco were deserved winners in their opening AFCON 2027 qualifier. Gabon were unable to match the hosts, who controlled the game and dominated possession.
The Atlas Lions took the lead after 36 minutes when United right-back Mazraoui burst forward, away from Gabon players in sight, before striking the ball from distance and into the back of the net.
Although the goalkeeper should have done better, Mazraoui showed that if you don’t buy a ticket, you can’t win the prize. His effort was rewarded as it gave Morocco a 1-0 lead at half-time.
The win was secured in the 84th minute, courtesy of a goal from Moroccan substitute Soufiane Rahimi. That goal came just seconds after Mazraoui was taken off.
