After a long wait, Manchester City have been found guilty on all but one of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League in 2013.
It’s been one of the most seismic days in Premier League history, with Manchester City found guilty on 114 breaches of the financial rules.
A legal battle commenced in 2023 after the Premier League accused City of wrongdoings on 115 counts. It is now being reported by multiple outlets that they have been found guilty of 114 breaches.
While City are expected to appeal the decision, it remains to be seen if they have any a leg to stand on after suffering such a heavy defeat to the Premier League. It came as no surprise that United fans wasted no time reacting to the news.
Man City could be stripped of 2011/12 & 2017/18 Premier League titles
The Premier League and Man City have yet to release a statement following Friday’s big story, but there has been non-stop discussion over the potential sanctions they could face.
It is understood that no decision has been made over City’s punishment, but among the possibilities are points deductions, fines, relegation or even stripping of titles won during that period.
Although it seems unlikely, this could mean that United are awarded the 2011/12 and 2017/18 Premier League crowns – after finishing those campaigns as runners-up.
The first of those titles — in 2011/12 — was decided on the final day of the season when Sergio Aguero scored a winner in stoppage time against QPR to secure the league crown on goal difference.
Secondly, in 2017/18, Guardiola’s City side finished the campaign with 100 points, 19 clear of Jose Mourinho’s United side.
If those two titles were awarded to United, the club’s record total of English top-flight triumphs would jump from 20 to 21. Another option would be to put an asterisk by their name forever on the list of winners.
Former United goalkeeper David de Gea has already asked how many Premier League titles he can now be credited with, which was a timely dig at City and their guilty verdict.
According to The Athletic, United have conducted internal assessments of the extent of the economic losses which could be attributed to City’s breaches of Premier League financial regulations.
Adam Crafton spoke to sources who revealed that United’s assessment mainly focused on the years in which they were most directly impacted – as outlined above. Other Premier League clubs are now thought to be considering their legal positions regarding the sanctions once they are announced.
Interestingly, the assessments were done while Omar Berrada was in the building following his move from Man City after Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner.
