This has been a unique international break for Senne Lammens, during which he has fulfilled his destiny to cap off a meteoric rise for Man Utd.
This time last year, Senne Lammens was being looked at as a cautious prospect for Man Utd after Ruben Amorim delayed his debut.
Lammens shone on debut and hasn’t looked back since, emerging as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers in a meteoric rise.
Now, he has capped off that rise with a statement international break for Belgium, prompting a ‘nightmare’ response from the Belgian press.
Belgian press say Senne Lammens is a ‘nightmare’ already
As good as Lammens is, and can potentially be, the task of becoming Belgium’s No. 1 is arguably as difficult as replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
With Thibaut Courtois, Belgium had one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history between the posts, so his successor had quite a name to live up to.
Lammens wasn’t even playing top-five league football at the start of last season, so he was far from contention for that spot.
However, through three games on this international break, Lammens has taken that No. 1 spot by the scruff of its neck and made it his own.
Two clean sheets, 19 saves, and one goal conceded in tough fixtures against Italy, Turkey, and France have firmly positioned Lammens as the “STAR” for his country.
Following in the footsteps of Courtois was never going to be easy, but just like he did at Old Trafford, Lammens has taken everything in his stride and done it like it was no big deal.
Belgian news outlet Het Nieuwsblad wrote that Lammens has proven in just three games that he’s worthy of the national team’s trust.
In particular, they noted his performance against Turkey, adding that he was a “nightmare” for Arda Guler.
They wrote, “Proved for the third consecutive match that he is worthy of the national team coach’s trust. He makes the saves he is supposed to make, and as a goalkeeper, that takes you a long way. Turned out to be a nightmare for Arda Güler.”
Lammens has emerged as the biggest winner from this international break, especially since his last national team outing ended with a mistake which saw Belgium eliminated from the World Cup.
There were questions around Lammens’ Man Utd form as well, so these three games are another reminder that United have a special player on their hands.
