Peter Schmeichel’s claim will strike a chord with Manchester United fans after the Red Devils were left licking their wounds against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Michael Carrick has seen Manchester United enter a nine-match winless streak in all competitions under his struggling permanent reign at Old Trafford this season.
The Red Devils chalked up their latest setback at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after Chelsea inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Man Utd in their Premier League clash.
Morgan Rogers delivered the first blow for Michael Carrick after he broke the deadlock for Chelsea, while Cole Palmer doubled the Blues’ lead 14 minutes later.
Peter Schmeichel’s point about Man Utd’s first-half performance perfectly captures Michael Carrick’s biggest issue
Manchester United’s woes against Chelsea came before Cole Palmer beat Senne Lammens from the spot-kick, as Lisandro Martinez was sent off at the weekend. Before Morgan Rogers netted in the 50th minute, United and Chelsea went into half-time with a 0-0 scoreline on the board at Stamford Bridge.
However, United did play well in the first half and the Red Devils pushed the Blues on the back foot. Even Chelsea had their chances to take the lead in the opening 45 minutes after an entertaining back-and-forth contest between both sides.
Speaking on Premier League Productions after half-time, Peter Schmeichel suggested that United could have been leading Chelsea by a “four or five” margin and it would have been hard to argue against the scoreline.
“It could have been four or five and no-one would have been able to say anything,” he said, as per the Premier League’s official website.
“We’ve seen a reaction; they’re fighting more and making runs. Bruno’s had the biggest chance of the game, but he rushed it a little bit.
“There’s intent from Man Utd and that’s what you want to see all the time, making runs that will benefit the team.”

Schmeichel perfectly captured what should have happened from United rather than what did happen against Chelsea. United fans would no doubt have had their heads in their hands after seeing the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo squander clear-cut chances in the first half.
United and Chelsea both had the same number of shots on target — at three apiece — in the opening 45 minutes, but the Red Devils’ wasted opportunities were evident. According to Sky Sports, United’s xG for the first half was 1.01 compared with Chelsea’s 0.28.
The Red Devils also had 17 touches in the Chelsea box compared with the 16 that the Blues had in United’s area. Michael Carrick’s men even edged out Chelsea for control of the ball in the first half, as Man Utd had 50.90 per cent possession compared to Chelsea’s 49.10 per cent.
“United should be in front, they’ve had the better situations all round and they’ve looked the more likely,” Andy Townsend added at half-time on Premier League Productions.
“You can see with both teams’ confidence is down and they look edgy defensively – especially Chelsea.”
Michael Carrick has overseen 13 matches across all competitions during the 2026-27 campaign at Old Trafford and the Red Devils have won twice, secured four draws and experienced seven defeats so far. Man Utd are currently in 16th place in the Premier League table after the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
