A top young European talent who had a trial with Manchester United has clinched his next career move.
Lucas Bergvall was pictured on trial with Manchester United in February 2021.
Fotboll Direkt reported at the time that midfielder Bergvall “is ranked by many as Sweden’s most exciting young player.”
He has now clinched his move to top tier side Djurgården, report Fotball Skanalen.
Bergvall will form part of their first team squad for 2023.
Lucas Bergvall signs with Djurgarden
Manchester United’s chances of signing Bergvall were always slim due to the Brexit rules which prevent the club signing overseas talents below 18.
Bergvall was playing for Swedish second tier side IF Brommapojkarna, where he made his debut at 15.
Aftonbladet reported PSV, Feyenoord and Manchester City were all also interested in his signature.
Bergvall was quoted: “It feels like a very good step in my career and I come to a club that I think suits me well right now. I had many choices but it still felt like DjurgÃ¥rden was a perfect step for me.”
DjurgÃ¥rden’s Sports Director Bosse Andersson said: “Lucas is one of Sweden’s most promising and well-publicized talents who has been courted by many clubs abroad and we are incredibly proud and grateful that he chose to come.
“He’s an incredibly skilled footballer and has a lot of experience at his young age, with his playing skills and it is great that he stays in Sweden.”
United can sign Bergvall when he turns 18 and are likely to be closely following his progress.
His move to Djurgarden can be viewed as a positive, that he did not sign for a big European club abroad, and is likely to be open to a bigger offer in the future.
He now has a bigger stage in his homeland to continue to develop his talents – if he continues to shine, United will be back to make a move in 2024.
