Erik ten Hag is ‘pushing’ for Manchester United to sign the Netherlands and Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries, says Florian Plettenberg.
The former Ajax manager is keen to sign a new right-back to provide competition for Diogo Dalot whose contract expires in June, but the Red Devils have the option of extending his deal by a further 12 months.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has played just four minutes of competitive football under Ten Hag, deemed ‘surplus to requirements’ by the 52-year-old despite being signed from Crystal Palace for £50m by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer three-and-a-half years ago, Ten Hag wants to bolster his right-back options.

According to Sky Germany reporter Plettenberg, Dumfries is currently at the top of Ten Hag’s right-back wish list over fellow Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong and Lyon’s Malo Gusto.
Dumfries is currently in the midst of his second season at the San Siro following his move to Milan in the summer of 2021.
The 26-year-old attacked-minded right-back won two trophies in his first season under Nerazzurri boss Simone Inzaghi.
In 65 games for Inter, the 42-time Netherlands international has scored seven goals and laid on ten assists.
Dumfries played every minute of Holland’s World Cup campaign with former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal picking him over Bayer Leverkusen’s Frimpong to play at right wing-back.
Inter’s number two was influential in the Oranje’s 3-1 win against the United States of America in the round of 16.
Dumfries was involved in all three of his nation’s goals as he scored one and set up the other two.
Ten Hag will be well aware of his qualities given he would have watched him up close and personal during his time in charge of Ajax.
Dumfries contract with Inter expires in 2025, but he wouldn’t come to Old Trafford to be Dalot’s understudy – he would want to usurp the Portuguese international and be Ten Hag’s first choice right-back.
