'Complete midfielder'... 21-year-old scores first ever professional goals after Manchester United release

Former Manchester United youngster Mark Helm scored his first ever professional goals at the weekend.

Not every young footballer to come through the Manchester United ranks is destined for a successful career at Old Trafford.

And that doesn’t have to mean the end. Just ask Danny Simpson and Danny Drinkwater, who won the Premier League title with Leicester City.

Mark Helm is one of the recent United academy players released who is looking to establish a career for himself after leaving the club in 2021.

Mark Helm scores first professional goals

Mark Helm could have considered himself a little unfortunate to be cut by Manchester United in 2021. He had developed an ability to score from midfield and put together an impressive highlight reel of goals.

He was part of a side which reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals in 2020, and featured in sides along with Amad and Alejandro Garnacho during his time in the academy.

Helm ended up signing with Burnley and joined up with their under-21 side initially. He made the Burnley first team bench but did not get as far as making his debut.

This past January the decision was made to cut ties, with Helm signing on a permanent basis with League One side Burton Albion.

The drop down a division has done Helm the world of good. He is now playing regularly at first team level, with 13 appearances so far.

At the weekend he netted his first ever professional goals, netting a brace to fire Burton to a 3-2 win over a collapsing Sheffield Wednesday.

His manager Dino Maamria told the club website: “Mark is a real asset. He has huge potential.

“He’s robust and his quality with the ball is there for all to see. He runs his socks off and he’s the complete midfielder.”

The comments and his progress are testament to his ability and the good work Manchester United made with him through his developmental years.

There’s a long way for him to go to reach the Premier League, but this is a moment Helm will simply want to enjoy. It was a breakthrough he needed.
