'Move him out quickly': Roy Keane says Manchester United must axe award-winning star

Roy Keane has called on Manchester United to axe David de Gea despite his Golden Glove award.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane famously pulls no punches, and David de Gea is the latest recipient of one of his knockout blows.

On a day De Gea was presented with the Golden Glove award at Old Trafford, Keane says United must be ruthless and show him the exit door.

The club legend says United must have a fresh start in goal if the club is going to reach the very top level and improve on the third placed finish.

Keane on De Gea

Roy Keane told Sky Sports’ live post-game coverage that United cannot afford to be sentimental with David de Gea.

He said: “They are all patting him on the back, I’d move him out quickly De Gea. He wouldn’t be for me.

“He’s not going to get Manchester United back winning trophies. Absolutely not.”

De Gea’s contract expires this summer and he is yet to officially sign a new deal. The Telegraph reported last week that Erik ten Hag is yet to sign it off.

Keane says he did not believe De Gea would want to stay as a number two, and asked if he had been a club legend, he responded: “I don’t think so. He’s done ok.”

He added that De Gea had made ‘mistakes over the past few years’ which have signified that it is time to move on.

While De Gea has kept more clean sheets than any other Premier League goalkeeper this season, this also comes in tandem with an improved defensive record from the entire team under Erik ten Hag.

De Gea has made mistakes, most recently costing United defeat in the away loss to West Ham.

The goalkeeper position is one which has been highly scrutinised, but United’s direction there is unclear, and this fits alongside a wider spending strategy with a striker and midfielder among the players required this summer.

There is a chance De Gea survived and does get offered the new deal, but as Keane’s comments show, De Gea is under the spotlight.
