Report: Ten Hag fave could join Prem rival if he leaves Manchester United in summer

Rival Premier League clubs could offer Wout Weghorst a fresh start if Manchester United opt against signing the Burnley loanee on a permanent basis during the summer transfer window.

That is according to The Telegraph; decisions needing to be made regarding the futures of Weghorst and fellow January arrival Marcel Sabitzer over the coming weeks.

Both players have had their moments in United red. But, for all his effort, for all his enthusiasm, a tally of two goals in 25 games – and none in the Premier League – may be fatal to Weghorst’s hopes of staying at Old Trafford beyond the current campaign.

Sabitzer, meanwhile, offers plenty of drive and off-the-ball movement but appears to lack the requisite technical ability to truly thrive in a Ten Hag team.

Will Burnley loanee Wout Weghorst stay at Manchester United?

Sabitzer would set Man United back £17 million if they opt to turn his short-term deal from Bayern Munich into a permanent transfer. How much United will have to pay for Weghorst is anyone’s guess.

The Red Devils parted with a compensation fee of £2.5 million in January.

Parent club Burnley will not stand in his way if Weghorst plans to cut ties with the Championship champions; Vincent Kompany introducing a more possession-based style since replacing Sean Dyche.

And The Telegraph believe that, if Manchester United opt against keeping Weghorst in the North West, the experienced Netherlands international may be offered the opportunity to continue his career elsewhere in the top-flight.

Weghorst’s work-rate and physicality could certainly come in handy at the likes of Everton, West Ham or Nottingham Forest. Goals are in short supply for the Dutchman at Man United. But the former Wolfsburg, Besiktas and AZ Alkmaar targetman has proven himself to be a reliable finisher elsewhere.

During spells in the Bundesliga, Eredivisie and Turkish Super Lig, Weghorst scored 118 goals.

“He is often in the right position. I think he has intelligence. He is a very good anticipator,” Ten Hag said back in March, Weghorst setting up Marcus Rashford’s decider in the Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle United.

“As for the rest, there is the defending part which he is also very good (at). Why does he start every game? Because he is capable. He is physically capable to play a lot of games. He’s a very fit player. He recovers very well.”

Even if Weghorst does stay, he is likely to find game-time far harder to come by in 2023/23.

A top-class centre-forward is right at the top of Ten Hag’s summer wishlist; Harry Kane, Victor Osimhen and Rasmus Hojlund among his targets.
