Man Utd defender could still be sold this summer despite a new contract extension

It appears that Ethan Laird may still be sold by Manchester United despite having the club just this week triggering a one-year contract extension.

Ethan Laird has spent the entirety of the 22/23 season on loan at QPR. Aside from one injury, the full-back had a terrific campaign and featured heavily for the London-based side.

Thanks to this, earlier this week Laird was rewarded with a one-year extension to his existing contract. This would keep him tied to the club until at least 2024 – as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

However, further information has just come out stating that Laird may be in fact sold before the end of the transfer window.

Ethan Laird to be sold?

According to The Athletic, Laird is at risk of leaving Manchester United for good in this summer transfer window.

His Old Trafford contract expires next summer. United recently triggered his additional year, and the expectation is now that he will be sold before the end of the transfer window.

United wanted him to sign an extension before he went on loan last season. However, a deal could not be agreed.

Laird made 33 appearances in all competitions for Queens Park Rangers in the Championship last season. He is once again determined to play regularly.

He knows his best chance of that happening is away from United. Championship clubs are already showing an interest in his services.

Laird would be in direct competition with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka currently ahead of him, while Marc Jurado is also making his way through.

It may be best to cash in for the young defender, especially if he is keen to go. Another loan move this season would only likely result in him leaving on a free in 2024.
