Manchester United are plotting a move for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount and saw exactly why he is needed at the weekend.
Chelsea ace Mason Mount is widely tipped to Manchester United’s first summer signing, with The Times reporting talks have been opened with the Blues.
Saturday’s defeat at Wembley highlighted why Manchester United are keen on bringing in Mason Mount as an upgrade on Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen was substituted in the 62nd minute against City and replaced with Alejandro Garnacho amid a tactical reshuffle after United had conceded the second goal.

Mason Mount upgrade on Christian Eriksen
Christian Eriksen has been an excellent addition for Manchester United on a free transfer. But there is a case he should be a squad player rather than an automatic starter.
Eriksen’s form since returning from injury has been a little underwhelming. He has also shown this season that he might not be the right player in ‘big games’.
It was the right decision to substitute him after an hour at Wembley. Eriksen had completed only 13 passes against City, struggling to make an impression on the game.
He offered little off the ball either, winning no tackles, and while there are clearly upgrades to be made up front and in goal, midfield is an area which needs tweaking.
This is why Manchester United are keen on bringing in Mason Mount, with The Mail reporting the club are plotting a £55 million offer.
Mount is seven years younger than Christian Eriksen, and offers more off the ball than the Dane.
Eriksen is a quality player but United have leaned on him more than should have been necessary, with the midfielder playing more than 3,000 minutes, despite missing three months with an injury.
If United had the squad depth to utilise Eriksen more sparingly, his form would likely benefit.
Bringing in Mason Mount gives Erik ten Hag a valuable option, and if the England star can recreate the form he showed at Chelsea in 2021/22 when he scored 12 goals and provided 12 assists, he will be a very shrewd addition to the side.
