Manchester United need to be tactful over a potential renewal for goalkeeper David de Gea.
With the season over, Manchester United are expected to move onto shaping the squad for next season.
One of the many questions at hand right now, is what happens in goal, and what happens with David de Gea.
The Spaniard put in another below-par display at Wembley in the FA Cup final defeat to City.

David de Gea expected to land new deal
As the situation stands, David de Gea is still expected to land a contract extension with Manchester United. His current deal expires on June 30.
The Telegraph reported in late May that Erik ten Hag had not yet given final approval on De Gea’s deal, however, a subsequent interview with The Times saw the boss indicate the goalkeeper’s deal will be renewed.
Ten Hag did say De Gea’s number one position is not guaranteed. But he was pretty clear that the Spaniard will sign a renewal.
He said: “Yes, but I will not say he’ll always be my No 1 because in a club like Man United there must be competition in all positions. You can’t do it with 11 players. It is impossible. You need double positions.”
The announcement United fans don’t want right now
If the contract renewal is all agreed and pretty much done, Manchester United would be wisely advised to put it on ice for a fortnight. The Telegraph report the deal is expected to be announced ‘shortly’.
United fans are hurting from the FA Cup final defeat to City, and for many, De Gea was culpable for the defeat beyond just the saveable second goal he conceded.
His kicking saw United constantly relinquish possession, with a 49 pass percentage completion rate, in comparison to Stefan Ortega’s 90 per cent in the City goal.
United need a plan in goal, and if De Gea is going to be a back-up, fine. Let’s make the move for a new number one now.
At least allow the pain of the defeat to fade away. When De Gea’s contract renewal is announced, it will be met with a combination of scorn and derision, rather than happiness.
And that ill-feeling will only intensify if an announcement is made over the next 48 hours, when the pain from Wembley is still being felt.
