Potential £44m Manchester United move is no surprise if you’ve been paying attention

Manchester United are being tipped to move for France international defender Axel Disasi.

Earlier this week French newspaper L’Equipe reported that Monaco defender Axel Disasi has decided he wants to join Manchester United.

The media treated this as bombshell news totally out of the blue.

But actually it shows how Manchester United have been working really hard behind the scenes ahead of the transfer window – which is very uncharacteristic.

Axel Disasi being lined up as option

Goal reported United’s move for Axel Disasi was ‘out of nowhere’, while The Sun labelled it a ‘surprise’ transfer.

Perhaps, in the respect that Kim Min-Jae is the club’s top option, it would be surprising if United pulled the trigger to sign Disasi now, it would be surprising – however, this is simply a case of the club lining up an alternative.

For if you have been really paying attention – and granted many don’t keep up with transfer rumours through the season – you would not be surprised to see Axel Disasi’s name linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United’s interest in Disasi dates back to right after the World Cup, when The Mail reported in early January that the Red Devils had held ‘initial talks’ with Monaco over the defender.

Foot Mercato reported a few weeks ago that talks had been stepped up with Disasi’s representatives.

He was quoted by Goal in April insisting he wants to play Champions League football and test himself at the ‘highest level’, with The Mail linking him with a £44 million move.

So the breadcrumbs have been there for a while. L’Equipe‘s report that Disasi has decided he wants United, is just a continuation of what has been building behind the scenes for months.

Manchester United getting organised

Another notable part about all of this, is that Manchester United might not even buy Axel Disasi this summer.

A move is dependent on Harry Maguire leaving the club, and Kim Min-Jae is believed to be ahead in the pecking order. Other names like Jurrien Timber are also in the mix.

This just shows that United are working hard to be organised in advance of the transfer window, and won’t be caught unprepared – like it has seemed in previous summers.

With Erik ten Hag in charge, it is no surprise to see United being unusually meticulous. We will soon see if it pays off, or if the way the Glazers have slowed down the takeover, undoes all the hard work.
