Manchester United have reportedly made contact with Atletico Madrid about a deal that could see former Chelsea loanee Joao Felix return to the Premier League this summer.
If a Harry Kane or a Victor Osimhen are currently out of Erik ten Hag’s reach – Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis indicated over the weekend that he wanted over £150 million for the latter – is this the best case scenario for Manchester United?
A young, up-and-coming centre-forward like Rasmus Hojlund arriving alongside a more established, short-term addition.
Spanish publication ABC reports that Manchester United, Newcastle and Aston Villa have all contacted Joao Felix’s camp regarding a potential return to England.
Atletico will not stand in the Portugal international’s way, and would be happy to green-light another loan deal in the hope that Felix can raise his value again before an eventual sale in the summer of 2024.
Manchester United make Joao Felix contact
The 23-year-old impressed in difficult circumstances at Chelsea during the second half of last season. And ABC believe that Felix would now prefer to join a club capable of offering Champions League football, meaning he is likely to choose Man United or Newcastle over an ambitious Aston Villa outfit.
United were linked with Felix before he joined Chelsea in January. The one-time Benfica wonderkid – who became the fourth-most expensive player in football history when he joined Atletico in a £113 million deal back in 2019 – ticks a lot of boxes for Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag, who reportedly wants another attacking addition to join Hojlund at Old Trafford (Manchester Evening News).
Though Atletico would likely demand a sizeable loan fee, Felix would add versatility, depth and supreme technical quality in the forward positions, while potentially leaving funds over for United to bring in a Sofyan Amrabat or an Axel Disasi as well.
Gary Neville is a fan
“He’s a proper player, him,” United legend Gary Neville told Sky Sports after Felix scored a sublime consolation goal during Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford in May.
“Just the way he moves with the ball looks so different. So in control. Class – real class.”
Felix scored four goals in just 11 Premier League starts for Chelsea. He netted a further four in seven La Liga starts for Atletico.
