Director thinks it has just got 'harder' to sign £9m Man United ace

FC Twente fear their pursuit of Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri has just got a ‘little harder’ after the Uruguayan featured in both of the club’s opening Premier League fixtures.

While the avalanche of criticism coming Antony’s way still feels a little forced in some quarters – he was one of Erik ten Hag’s brighter performances against both Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur – the clamour for Facundo Pellistri to be given more of a run in the Manchester United side will only increase as long as the Brazilian’s end product remains elusive.

Pellistri has already made almost as many appearances in the Premier League this season (two) as he did during the whole of ten Hag’s debut campaign at Old Trafford (four).

And while FC Twente remain hopeful of striking a loan deal for the former Penarol whizzkid, technical director Jan Streuer knows that the direction of travel may be moving against his side.

Manchester United face Facundo Pellistri decision

“We’re trying to get Pellistri,” Streuer tells ESPN .

“Ten Hag introduced him (off the bench against Wolves and Spurs), so that’s a bit stupid, isn’t it!,” the director adds with a wink. “Now it gets a little harder (to sign him), I think.”

Arnold Bruggink, another Twente chief, made similar noises when asked about Pellistri earlier this month. Man United’s £9 million benchwarmer had just scored a last-gasp equaliser against Athletic Bilbao in pre-season, after all.

And Twente are leaving nothing for chance, identifying Mitchell van Bergen as an alternative transfer target.

Eredivisie loan move on the cards

“He is a candidate. Van Bergen has not performed optimally in the last two years and has not played very much, but we have the feeling that he is a talented player,” Streuer adds. “He must return to his old level of Heerenveen and Vitesse.”

In addition to Pellistri, the likes of Eric Bailly, Dean Henderson, Donny van de Beek and Harry Maguire are all facing uncertain futures heading into the final week of the window.

Fred has already gone, joining Fenerbahce in Turkey.
