Former Manchester United winger Gordon Hill has admonished the Tottenham Hotspur players for allegedly diving too much during the London side’s 2-0 win against Erik ten Hag’s men.
The goals came in the second half of the game with Pape Matar Sarr and an own goal from Lisandro Martinez enough to hand Ange Postecoglou’s side their first win of the season.
The game got away from United when they were denied a penalty shout early on when an Alejandro Garnacho strike was deflected behind for a corner, the replays showed it look to have hit Spurs defender Cristian Romero on the arm.
The defender’s arm was in an unnatural position when it struck but the referee, Michael Oliver, failed to point to the spot despite a VAR check.
‘Ruining the game’
As mentioned, Hill was less than impressed with the perceived antics of the Spurs players. During the game, the former United winger wrote his thoughts on X, the social media app, and believes the antics from the home side are ruining the game.
“Watching the United game and have never seen so many players go down thinking they have been shot, Hollywood at its best,” Hill wrote on his social media account. “(It’s) Ruining the game.”
There were questionable refereeing decisions throughout and the decision to not award United a penalty was a strange one and it seemed to galvanise the home crowd.
Is Hill right?
The former United man may well have had a point with his Tweet. Antony was penalised in the first half for a tackle when Yves Bissouma was racing away but the contact seemed minimal.
During the final act of the second half, Spurs claimed two penalties almost back to back, replays showed, again, there was minimal contact yet down went the Spurs player.
Nevertheless, despite this, that cannot be an excuse. United seemingly collapsed during the second half so trying to blame it on the home side’s supposed cheating is rather irrelevant due to Erik ten Hag’s side failing to turn up during the second half, themselves.
