"Backwards": Sky Sports pundit rips into Varane amongst other United 'superstars' and believes Ten Hag is to blame

Manchester United beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane, but it wasn’t exactly a convincing performance.

A late Diogo Dalot strike was the settler in what was a rather lacklustre run-out for Erik ten Hag‘s side.

The team looked very disjointed and chances were few and far between – although thankfully they pulled through to get just their fifth win of the season.

The performance didn’t exactly get pundits talking about United in a positive light once again and has actually just further cemented doubt in some of the players and the manager.

Tim Sherwood rips into Manchester United’s ‘superstars’

Tim Sherwood spoke on Sky Sports News today (Via X) and discussed the idea that Ten Hag is too kind to his ‘superstars’ and is actually moving backwards with United as a side.

“He’s done well last season, he’s took them backwards this season,” Sherwood begun.

“And the best players are the ones who are coming off the bench. The superstars are not there at the moment.

“I think Varane gets away with it. I really do. He’s in one week, he plays for a couple of games and then he goes out injured again.

Maguire‘s took all the stick in the world, but he’s the one who’s going to be back in that team. He’s going to play regualrly from now on along with McTominay.

“I talked about Hannibal, the boy who went to Birmingham on loan, done well. Went away from the club to gain the experience to come back and play exceptional in two games.

“He was exceptional because he wanted to run around he wanted to get the ball back, he had the urgency. he gave them a bit of energy in that midfield area.

“As soon as the ‘superstars are fit he drops him and puts him back on the bench again.”

Is Erik ten Hag to blame?

Sherwood’s argument is the fact that United’s big names have the luxury of waltzing into the team based off their status – which is a fair argument given some of Ten Hag’s team selections this season.

“A lot of superstars that they’re bringing in to that football club,” he adds. “Sometimes they look like they’re doing Man United a favour by playing for them. Now that is down to the manager.

“The manager has to take repsonsibilty at the moment. Every football club looks for progression. Last season it was progression, but this season they are going backwards.”

Rashford, Casemiro and more guilty

We can see where he’s coming from, particularly with names like Rashford and Casemiro.

Rashford in particular has been dreadful this seaosn, but is being kept in the side from the off based on past merit. A good manager should be playing based off performance.

It remains to be seen if this will change heading into the rest of the season – but it’s definitely a point well made from the former Spurs man.
