'It suits him': Jamie Redknapp says £60k-per-week United player looks great in new role

Scott McTominay was on the scoresheet again for Manchester United against Sheffield United as he continued thriving in an attacking role.

Manchester United’s number 39 was entrusted with starting against Sheffield. This as a result of Scott McTominay’s heroics against Brentford.

He paid that trust back to Erik ten Hag in full with a goal in the first half to open proceedings.

McTominay then gave away a penalty which is unfortunate but his goal is the real story, with his strike showing his attacking instincts are well suited to the role he’s been placed in.

Impressing in his new role after the goal, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp couldn’t help but praise the positional change for United’s £60k-per-week man.

Jamie Redknapp on Scott McTominay

Manchester United’s Scottish midfielder’s attacking displays for his nation have inspired Erik ten Hag to use him similarly.

Three goals in just two games in that role has proven the Dutchman right in his decision. Sky Sports’ pundit Redknapp agrees.

“He’s playing in a more forward position, I think it suits him he’s getting in and around the goal.”

The former Liverpool man is clearly a fan of McTominay in that role, and the stats show he’s backing it up.

Despite a poor team display, the idea is right

While against Sheffield, for the majority of the game, the midfield was struggling, it was along the right lines.

Sofyan Amrabat was brilliant for periods of the game dictating play and covering the entire midfield.

Then Bruno Fernandes and McTominay were ahead of him, which is an incredibly attacking duo. But both are more ‘moments of brilliance’ orientated players, opposed to keeping possession.

McTominay would work in this position long term but it would require a Mason Mount in midfield instead of Bruno which won’t happen.

A conundrum for Ten Hag which he will need to find a solution, in order to fit in this impressive list of names.
