Furious Manchester United fans have ruthlessly slammed Red Devils skipper Bruno Fernandes after his disappointing performance against Sheffield United on Saturday evening.
Fernandes has been in scintillating form for his country during the international break and has been an integral part of Portugal’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.
However, the 29-year-old Portuguese midfielder didn’t impress fans with his ‘subpar passing display’ at Bramall Lane, with Fernandes “playing nonsense” in the first half.
Scott McTominay fired United into the lead in the first half after Fernandes’ lofted ball found its way into the path of the Scottish midfielder inside the box.
The 26-year-old United star then evaded his Sheffield United marker before he pulled off a scuffed shot that beat a helpless Wes Foderingham.
McTominay’s opener was cancelled out after he conceded a penalty due to a handball, with Oli McBurnie converting from the spot-kick for Sheffield United.
Fernandes, who was deployed in an attacking role behind striker Rasmus Hojlund, was met with heavy criticism for his “horrific Hollywood balls” during the match.
United fans react to Fernandes’ performance
“We will never control football matches with Bruno Fernandes in the team,” one fan said.
Someone else added: “The Bruno Fernandes that plays for Portugal I don’t know why he doesn’t play for Man [United], too.”
“Bruno Fernandes is playing nonsense,” a third simply posted.
Another X, AKA Twitter, user wrote: “What’s wrong with Bruno Fernandes this evening?”
While a fifth tweeted: “They need to start talking about how bad Bruno Fernandes has been.”
And a sixth commented: “Bruno Fernandes needs to start performing like a captain and stop these horrific Hollywood balls that aren’t paying off.”
A seventh posted: “The day Man United fans open their eyes to see Bruno Fernandes is mid, that’s the day we wake up.”
Fernandes can bounce back
The pressure is certainly on Fernandes — and the United attacking line — to step things up a notch due to the Red Devils’ hit-and-miss season so far.
Fernandes has shown his pure brilliance in a United shirt before, not to mention his stunning run of form for Portugal at the moment has caught fans’ eyes.
The United midfield hasn’t come together as fans had hoped this season, but Fernandes’ responsibilities significantly increase when he’s in the No 10 role.
While the fan reaction to Fernandes’ performance against Sheffield United wasn’t overwhelmingly positive, the United star can turn things around going forward.
Let’s not forget that Fernandes is one of, if not, the best United signings since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
However, fans will be hopeful that ‘Portugal Fernandes’ turns up for United’s next Premier League clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford on 29th October.
