Paul Merson believes that Manchester United’s last-gasp 2-1 victory over Brentford was merely papering over the cracks.
The Red Devils have won four and lost four of their eight Premier League games this season and have also lost two Champions League games in a row.
The win over Thomas Frank’s side could well be momentous at this early stage in the season, there are echoes of Manchester United’s crucial 2-1 victory over Liverpool last season which kickstarted their campaign.
Paul Merson, however, believes that, despite the craziness and the sheer jubilation at full-time, the win just papers over the cracks at Old Trafford.
Merson on United’s win
Writing in his weekly Sky Sports column, the former Arsenal midfielder believes despite the result merely covering up the issues temporarily, they showed some positive signs in the win over the Bees.
“You have to start somewhere, though, they did not give up, they kept on going, and they got the result.
“But you need a couple more results before you can start saying they are going to be challengers, far from it.
“But fair play though to come back as you have lost a couple of games before, you’ve lost at home to Galatasaray in midweek, and the pressure is on as you are playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
The win, despite how emotional and enthralling it was, did bring up the same old problems at Old Trafford.
United’s struggles in front of goal
Part of the reason that United have been in such bad form this season is not only their lack of a defensive structure but their lack of attacking prowess, too.
Erik ten Hag’s side have scored just nine goals in eight Premier League games with Marcus Rashford, the club’s top goalscorer last season, netting just once this campaign.
Rasmus Hojlund has scored three times in the Champions League, but none in the Premier League, it’s clear that the forwards need to step up in the next few weeks for United.
