Rio Ferdinand has sympathy for Man Utd star who would admit he needs to 'buck up his ideas'

Former Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has singled out one player who needs to buck up his ideas after a poor start to the season.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United currently sit 10th in the Premier League table after four wins and four defeats from eight Premier League games.

A late win over Brentford has spared the blushes of the former Ajax coach who was staring down the barrel of a third straight home defeat.

The international break has seemingly come at the worst possible time for the Red Devils but some players were spared major criticism over the international break.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has singled out one player in particular, for who he has some sympathy.

Ferdinand’s advice

Speaking on his podcast FIVE, Ferdinand believes that United goalkeeper Andre Onana was at fault for the goal scored by Mathias Jensen for Brentford.

The goalkeeper came under scrutiny during the win over Brentford for the ease with which he allowed Jensen’s shot to slip through his fingers, Ferdinand believes he can relate to that situation.

“I saw a bit of myself, I didn’t play well when England drew against Greece when David Beckham scored that free-kick [to famously secure World Cup 2002 qualification],” Ferdinand said.

“I remember celebrating with Becks and thanking him. I saw a bit of that in Onana. When you make a mistake… I could sense the relief that he had.

“He should have made the save. In training, he probably makes that save every day. I saw a quote from Peter Schmeichel, who spoke to him and told him not to let [the pressure of] Man Utd get to you.”

Onana’s need for improvement

Onana joined the club for £43 million this summer and there was palpable excitement at the prospect of United adding a modern goalkeeper to their ranks.

However, Onana looks a shell of his former self as it seems the pressure of the United shirt is weighing heavy on the mind of the 27-year-old.

Ferdinand believes that the goalkeeper knows what is needed for him to succeed at Old Trafford.

The former United defender said: “If you were to speak to Onana himself, I think he would say, ‘This is not the start I wanted, this is nowhere near the level I am used to performing at and this is not the standard required at Man Utd so I need to buck up my ideas’.”
