Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright react to Manchester United red card controversy

Jamie Carragher has been left baffled after seeing Marcus Rashford receive a straight red card in Manchester United’s clash with Copenhagen.

It was all going so well.

Rasmus Hojlund scored twice against his former club to fire United in front amid some lovely counter-attacking play.

United were looking comfortable but it all turned before half-time as Marcus Rashford received a straight red card.

Rashford was attempting to shield the ball away from Copenhagen defender Elias Jelert, but his foot landed on the Dane’s ankle.

Referee Donatas Rumsas went over to the monitor and gave Rashford his marching orders, sparking a late United collapse as Copenhagen twice found the net to level the game up.

Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright baffled by Marcus Rashford red card

The decision will of course split opinion; some will simply see this as dangerous play, others will appreciate there was no intent from Rashford.

Pundit Jamie Carragher was baffled, taking to social media to suggest that there was ’no way’ Rashford should have been sent off.

Carragher believes that replaying incidents in slow motion only makes things look worse, leading to red cards.

Ian Wright agrees, stating on social media that there is simply ‘no chance’ Rashford should have been red-carded.

Former United midfielder Tom Cleverley told Sky Sports that the red card was ‘harsh’ and that there was ‘no intent’ in the challenge at all.

Robbie Savage thinks Rashford red was fair

Not everybody is leaping to Rashford’s defence though, with Robbie Savage suggesting that the right decision was made.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Savage suggested that there can be ‘no arguments’ as replays showed Rashford landing on Jelert’s ankle.

Savage doesn’t think that slowing the footage down made a difference, simply feeling that Rashford deserved his straight red.

“When you see the first replay we’ve seen I think there’s no arguments. I know people will say it’s slowed down, but it’s a straight red for me,” said Savage.

This is a decision which could seriously cost United tonight and we can absolutely understand the anger from supporters with Rashford harshly sent off.
