Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has been hailed by fans as “Mr Champions League” after his stunning performance against boyhood club FC Copenhagen on Wednesday evening.
Hojlund appeared frustrated as he was subbed off in the second half and replaced by Anthony Martial in United’s 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
The 20-year-old Denmark striker has failed to score in eight Premier League appearances so far for United since his £72m signing from Serie A side Atalanta.
However, Hojlund has been clinical in the final third in the Champions League this season, scoring against Bayern Munich and bagging a brace against Galatasaray.
The former Atalanta star continued his fine goalscoring form in Europe’s top-flight competition with his sensational first-half brace against Copenhagen.
United fans react to Hojlund’s stunning performance
Hojlund fired United into the lead in the third minute at the Parken, with the Red Devils star converting from close range after being picked out by Scott McTominay.
The Denmark international doubled United’s lead after breaking on a counter-attack, with Copenhagen’s Kamil Grabara keeping out Alejandro Garnacho’s initial strike.
While Grabara managed to prevent Garnacho’s effort, the Copenhagen shot-stopper could only parry the ball into the path of Hojlund for an easy finish.
“Rasmus [is] Mr Champions League,” one fan simply said.
Someone else commented: “That’s the kind of service Rasmus needs. Put the ball in those areas [and] he’ll score.”
While a third added: “Proper number 9 striker Hojlund [is]! Give him the service and he’ll score so many goals!”
Another X, formerly Twitter, user wrote: “Rasmus Hojlund was made for the Champions League.”
And a fifth posted: “This is what happens when you give Hojlund some proper service, let him cook.”
“My man Rasmus Hojlund, he loves the big stage,” a sixth fan tweeted.
A seventh said: “If Rasmus [has] service like that regularly, then he’ll score loads. Feed him and he will flourish!”
Hojlund delivers for United
United manager Erik ten Hag backed Hojlund ahead of the Copenhagen clash and the Red Devils forward rewarded the former Ajax boss for his faith.
The Red Devils have been poor in the final third this season, with United relying on the goalscoring contributions from midfield and even the defence at times.
Hojlund hasn’t been at fault for the lack of goalscoring output either, especially as the United star has shown his hard work rate and determination on the pitch.
However, the Copenhagen clash showed United players that the Denmark striker needs proper service and he will capitalise on any chances put in his path.
