Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand is rueing ‘bad news’ regarding the fitness of Christian Eriksen and Rasmus Hojlund as the injured Manchester United duo are forced to pull out of international duty.
To think, this was supposed to be the moment when Manchester United turned a corner, and put a seemingly never-ending series of fitness issues behind them.
But then Aaron Wan-Bissaka was ruled out against Luton Town due to illness. Christian Eriksen didn’t even make it to half-time. And, to compound it all, the sight of Rasmus Hojlund limping off clutching his hamstring had the United fans dreading the potential of an Anthony Martial-led frontline when club football resumes later in November.
Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, is not the only coach rueing another couple of Manchester United injuries.
Hojlund and Eriksen injured
“I always sit with my life in my hands in these midweek matches and during the last weekend before (the international break). It was one of those weekends where a little too much bad news rolled in,” Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand tells DR Sporten, his go-to playmaker and his number one striker ruled out of the Euro 2024 qualifiers with Slovakia and Northern Ireland.
“They (Eriksen and Hojlund) are two very, very important players.
“But we have also done well without them in the past. And, in football it’s like that when someone is missing, others get the chance. And that’s how it is this time too.”
Manchester United update
Manchester United have released an update on the duo, via the club website.
It reads: “Christian has a knee injury that is set to keep him out for around a month, while striker Rasmus suffered a muscle strain. It is hoped he will return before the end of November.”
Manchester United curse continues
With seven to his name, only two players have more goals in European Championship qualifying than Hojlund, the former Manchester United duo of Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of him in the standings.
The £63 million signing from Atalanta is also the fastest player in United’s history to hit five goals in the Champions League, doing so in just four games while leaving the likes of Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo choking on his dust.
