Manchester United are back to winning ways after a Bruno Fernandes strike gave them a 1-0 victory against Fulham.
Manchester United‘s captain was their saviour against the Cottagers. His late goal ensured that United left London with all three points, but more importantly, took the burning pressure off of Erik ten Hag after a disastrous week.
But the game could have certainly been put to bed earlier. In the first half, Scott McTominay had a goal dubiously ruled out by VAR.
It was apparently the fault of Harry Maguire as to why the goal didn’t stand.
Harry Maguire reacts to disallowed Scott McTominay goal
The Manchester United defender wasn’t very pleased with the decision. A video has emerged that shows Maguire immediately reacting to the referee checking and then eventually disallowing the strike.
The video shows a clearly animated Maguire annoyed the decision is about to go against United. He screams the following at the VAR officials.
“I wasn’t even involved ref! Hey! I wasn’t even involved!”
The referee took no notice of the former United captain’s desperate appeals – and decided to disallow the goal anyway.
Why didn’t Scott McTominay’s goal stand?
Maguire was deemed to be interfering with play.
Law 11 in the FA handbook judges an offside player to become involved in active play by:
- “Interfering with an opponent”.
- “Clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent”
- “Making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball”.
The referee evidently deemed one of these as the case with the 30-year-old, therefore the Scotsman strike was chalked off.
It mattered not thanks to the Fernandes strike, but it definitely made the game a little bit more of a frustrating watch from Manchester United fans’ perspective.
