Roy Keane has offered a strong response to Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, accusing him of being disrespectful towards Manchester United.
United headed off to Anfield this afternoon, taking on Liverpool with few backing Erik ten Hag’s men for all three points.
In the face of heavy Liverpool pressure, United stood strong and ended up claiming a hard-earned point.
Liverpool had more than 30 shots on goal but United didn’t break and head back to Manchester with a 0-0 draw.
Roy Keane fumes over Virgil van Dijk comments
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk wasn’t too happy after the final whistle, seemingly baffled as to how his side didn’t claim all three points.
Van Dijk suggested that only one team really wanted to win the game and indicated that United were over the moon to get a point.
Those comments did not go down well former United skipper Roy Keane, who was on punditry duty on Sky Sports.
Keane raged about Van Dijk’s comments, suggesting that there was ‘a lot of arrogance’ coming out of the Dutch defender.
Keane highlighted that Liverpool have been in tough times before and have been happy with draws against United.
The Irishman took a jab at Liverpool by noting their lack of Premier League titles in recent times and believes that United wouldn’t have disrespected Liverpool in their tough times.
“We heard Van Dijk speaking there, obviously a lot of arrogance coming out of him, dishing United like that,” said Keane. “He needs a reminder himself, he’s playing for a club who has won one title in 30-odd years, he’s saying ‘only one team wanted to win, Man Utd are buzzing with a point’, Man Utd are in a difficult place, like Liverpool have been in a difficult place for many a year, so maybe that bit of arrogance backfired on him today.”
“I’ve come here many a time when I was at United when Liverpool were in a tough place and they were happy with a draw. To dish them like that, saying ‘oh they’re buzzing, only one team wanted to win’, United had one or two chances and were up against it but sometimes players need a reminder when they’re playing for clubs like Liverpool, and everyone is saying ‘Man Utd are this and that’, yeah United are in a bad place, but for many a year, Man Utd were in a good place and wouldn’t be disrespecting clubs like he is,” he added.
United had chances despite Van Dijk criticism
Yes, Liverpool had more shots on goal but so many of them didn’t even trouble Andre Onana.
The amount of times Liverpool took silly shots right into a United defender was frankly ridiculous.
Maybe we should praise the United defending there, getting in the right positions to snuff out Liverpool chances.
The decision-making from Liverpool wasn’t great though and United did manage to carve out a couple of openings.
Alejandro Garnacho could have done more with a one-on-one chance whilst Rasmus Hojlund fired straight at Alisson.
United had a gameplay here, so sit in and frustrate Liverpool and look for something on the break.
That doesn’t mean that United didn’t want to win the game and the comments from Van Dijk will probably spark a laugh or two in the United dressing room.
