Manchester United are ‘very likely’ to be the favourites to sign Serhou Guirassy with the Stuttgart striker holding out for a move to the Premier League during the January transfer window.
If Serhou Guirassy was in the position Rasmus Hojlund found himself occupying during the second half of Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Anfield, would Manchester United have been heading back down the M62 with all three points for the first time since 2016?
A hypothetical question it may be, of course. But a tally of 18 goals from just 13 appearances this season certainly suggests that Guirassy may have made better use of the chance which came Hojlund’s way, the Dane firing straight at Alisson Becker.
Manchester United like Serhou Guirassy
With Hojlund still awaiting his first Premier League goal, Man United have opened talks to bring in Guirassy as an affordable, and experienced, alternative. The well-travelled 27-year-old has a £15 million release clause in his Stuttgart contract.
And while there is interest from Borussia Dortmund too, Falk beleives that Guirassy would do what Jude Bellingham did not and turn down BVB for the Red Devils.
“I don’t think Borussia Dortmund is the favoured target of Serhou Guirassy. He would like to join the Premier League,” German reporter Christian Falk tells Caught Offside, the French finishing turning down a new contract with Stuttgart last week.
“He’s now pushing for a transfer. It’s very likely that Manchester United and Newcastle are now the favourites to land the player.”
Red devils ‘very likely’ to be among favourites
Guirassy has always been a semi-regular goalscorer but has taken his game to a whole new level in 2023/24.
Whether this is anything more than a brief purple patch remains to be seen, however, and United fans may have reservations about the prospect of signing another Bundesliga attacker following the struggles of Jadon Sancho, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Wout Weghorst at Old Trafford.
Man United are also keen on Marcos Leonardo of Santos. Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez is another potential option.
