Instant impact: Manchester United loan striker scores 3 minutes into debut

Manchester United youngster Joe Hugill is celebrating a perfect debut on loan at Burton Albion.

Joe Hugill clinched a loan move to League One strugglers Burton Albion last week.

It is the first proper loan move of his career. Last season he did spent time on loan at non-league Altrincham, an arrangement which saw him regularly train at Carrington and also play for the under-21s.

This time around he is on a full loan move, getting a taste of the Football League. And the young striker is off to a perfect start.

Joe Hugill scores debut goal

Joe Hugill was named on the bench on Monday night as Burton travelled to face Derby County.

He was brought on in the 62nd minute with his team trailing 2-1. And it didn’t take long for him to make an instant impact.

Hugill drew Burton level in the 65th minute, taking just three minutes to make his presence felt.

He broke the offside trap in the centre circle to bear down on goal, and kept his composure, slotting the ball low into the bottom corner.

It was a big moment for Hugill to announce himself to his new club, teammates and supporters, and an ideal way for him to boost his own confidence.

The goal was not quite enough to earn Burton a point, with Derby scoring an injury time winner to snatch the game 3-2.

Positive start for Joe Hugill

This was the kind of start any striker dreams of. It also might have impressed Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

Hugill is yet to make his first team debut, although has made the bench and did score in pre-season against Leeds.

A strong loan spell for Burton can help him get more opportunities in 2024/25. Prior to his loan move, Manchester United signed him to an extended contract.

Its fair to wonder whether Hugill could have done a better job than Anthony Martial. He’s available and fit and healthy. Which is more than can be currently said of the Frenchman, who has not made a matchday squad since December 9.
