Man Utd star's telling reaction when Newport County scored twice in FA Cup, his mentality is unrivalled

Kobbie Mainoo has summed up his elite mentality after the Manchester United star revealed his reaction to Newport County scoring twice in the FA Cup clash.

The 18-year-old Manchester United midfielder played a starring role in the fourth-round FA Cup tie against Newport County at the Rodney Parade on Sunday.

Kobbie Mainoo earned rave reviews from United fans over his midfield masterclass against Newport County, with the Red Devils star playing a key part in his side’s win.

Bruno Fernandes fired United into the lead in the seventh minute before Mainoo doubled his advantage six minutes later.

Mainoo coolly and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net with a fine finish after he was picked out from a Diogo Dalot pass inside the box.

It was the first time that the United midfielder scored for the club’s senior team, with Mainoo enjoying a remarkable breakthrough season at Old Trafford.

However, Fernandes and Mainoo’s efforts were undone after Newport County rallied back and Graham Coughlan’s men pulled level only two minutes into the second half.

Mainoo on United blowing a 2-0 lead

Manchester United managed to weather the storm after a fightback from Newport County and Erik ten Hag’s men sealed a 4-2 win on the night.

Antony restored United’s lead before Rasmus Hojlund found the back of the net in injury time, with the Red Devils reaching the next round of the FA Cup.

Speaking after United’s FA Cup win, Kobbie Mainoo was thrilled that he scored for the Red Devils and admitted that he had been “dreaming of this moment.”

The United midfielder insisted that it was “never a panic” when the Red Devils conceded twice and his side took a ‘back-to-basics’ approach when it happened.

Speaking to MUTV (via Manchester United’s official website), Mainoo said: “It’s a big point in my career.

“Obviously, coming in and to score my first goal. I’ve been dreaming of this moment for a long time. It’s been amazing.”

Mainoo added: “It’s just back to basics. We have great players who can create a goal at any time.

“So, at 2-2, it was never a panic. Just get back to the things we’re good at.

“It’s 0-0 [then in our heads] so we can always go and score more.”

Mainoo sets out United’s ‘next step’

United will now face the winner of Nottingham Forest vs Bristol City in the fifth round of the FA Cup after their victory over Newport County.

Bristol City played out a 0-0 draw with Forest on Friday at the Ashton Gate and the two sides will now meet in a fourth-round replay at the City Ground next month.

Mainoo revealed the “next step” for United is to progress to the FA Cup final and win the trophy, saying that every match in the cup tournament is “important.”

“It’s very important at this point of the season,” he said.

“Every cup win is important, it’s the next step to the final goal, which is winning a trophy.

“So, it’s very important.”
