Three theories explaining why Man Utd have reportedly rejected shock swap deal for Dutch international

Manchester United have reportedly rejected a swap deal involving Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Inter Milan ace Denzel Dumfries – but we have questions.

We came into January not really expecting United to do much transfer business and we are certainly still of the mindset.

United are likely to wait until the summer to make any transfer decisions – especially with Erik ten Hag’s future far from secure.

Add in that Ineos will want to assess the club as well as bring in recruitment staff and we can’t see United doing anything this month.

With that in mind, a new rumour has emerged surrounding a potential swap deal – and we just aren’t convinced.

Manchester United reportedly snub Aaron Wan-Bissaka swap offer

The Sun now claim that United have rejected a shock swap proposal from Italian giants Inter Milan as they look to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

It’s stated that Inter have offered Dutchman Denzel Dumfries to United in exchange for Wan-Bissaka – but the offer has been snubbed.

The report claims that United simply aren’t interested and the deal won’t be happening this month.

Dumfries is into the final 18 months of his contract and is currently nowhere near signing a new deal amid a stand-off with Inter.

Inter are seemingly open to selling Dumfries and their proposal would have surely involved United sending a decent chunk of cash alongside Wan-Bissaka.

United allegedly said no, so let’s dig into why that would be the case…

Why would United snub Denzel Dumfries?

The report notes that Ten Hag is a fan of Dumfries, which makes turning the swap offer down even more surprising.

If this offer did actually arrive – which we have our doubts about – then there are a few theories as to why United said no.

The first idea is that Inter demanded a fee alongside Wan-Bissaka and the price was just too rich for United’s blood.

United don’t have a big budget to work with right now and a move for Dumfries could have left the club in real problems in terms of financial fair play.

The second theory is that United didn’t want to be locked in to signing Dumfries when other right backs may be in mind for the summer window.

Dumfries is a superb attacking right back but United may have other targets on the radar and didn’t want to jump into a deal right now.

Fellow Dutchman Jeremie Frimpong has been linked whilst Galatasaray ace Sacha Boey is another name mentioned in recent times and United may want to keep the options open ahead of the summer.

A third interesting notion is that United don’t want to send Wan-Bissaka to Inter because he could be used in another deal this summer.

Reports last week indicated that United had already spoken to Crystal Palace about sending Wan-Bissaka back to Selhurst Park in a deal for Eagles winger Michael Olise.

That would be a hugely exciting move and United may want to hang on and continue pursuing that move instead of the Dumfries swap.

Dumfries is a name we can fairly confidently forget about for this month, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised if Wan-Bissaka is moved on at the end of the season.
