Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has broken his silence over a bizarre shakeup in his career after his sacking from Birmingham City.
Wayne Rooney is currently out of management after his ill-fated spell with the Championship club came to an end after 83 days in charge.
The 38-year-old former Manchester United striker left DC United in 2023 and made his return to England to take charge of Birmingham City.
However, Rooney endured a difficult period succeeding John Eustace at Birmingham City, with the United legend suffering nine defeats in 15 matches at the club.
Rooney was dismissed from his post last month after Birmingham City slipped to 20th in the Championship table, with the club sixth at the time of his appointment.
Tony Mowbray succeeded the former Red Devils and England star at Birmingham City, with Rooney’s future in management shrouded in mystery at the time.
Rooney later broke his silence after his dismissal from St Andrew’s and admitted it would take “some time” for him to bounce back from his recent setback.
Rooney’s next venture post-Birmingham City?
According to his Instagram post in January, Wayne Rooney said that he would “take some time” with his family after his sacking from Birmingham City.
The Manchester United legend ruled out a complete exit from management, with Rooney saying he would “prepare for the next opportunity” in his chapter as a manager.
However, it was speculated that Rooney could potentially turn to another career pursuit before returning to the dugout as a manager.
According to The Daily Star, Rooney was tipped to cross over into the world of boxing and to take part in a Misfits Boxing event.
Misfits Boxing has become popular – and widely criticised – in the UK after its emergence, with online personalities fighting inside the squared circle.
YouTuber KSI played a key role in the development of Misfits Boxing, with past events having been held in London, Sheffield and Leeds in the UK.
The newspaper reported that Misfits Boxing had been seen as a ‘serious option’ for Rooney and ‘talks’ had ‘taken place in recent weeks.’
Rooney, who is a big boxing fan, would be sanctioned to fight at Misfits Boxing as it does not fall under the umbrella of the British Boxing Board of Control.
Rooney responds to boxing speculation
Rooney confirmed that Misfits had “been in touch” and how a crossover into boxing had “been all over the news.”
However, the former Birmingham City boss told ex-United teammate Gary Neville that his “main focus” is to return to management over boxing at a Misfits event.
Rooney revealed his thoughts on an upcoming episode of The Overlap’s Stick to Football show, with the United legend sharing a clip of it on social media.
“There’s been a few [people in touch] and obviously that Misfits have been in touch and it’s been all over the news,” he said.
“But I want to focus on getting back into management, that’s my focus.
“I’ve seen it all over the past couple of days and the headlines but my main focus is getting back into football.”
