Manchester United had something of an exodus this winter as multiple players departed on loan with game time in mind.
With a bloated squad and several talented prospects not getting the game time they need to develop, Manchester United rightly decided to loan them out.
Jadon Sancho was the most high-profile loan, heading to Borussia Dortmund until June. Others from the first team included Facundo Pellistri and Hannibal Mejbri while Dan Gore has headed to Port Vale on loan.
Pellistri and Hannibal both headed to La Liga, Granada and Sevilla respectively and so far have had vastly different fortunes at their loan clubs.
The Uruguayan was phenomenal last weekend against Barcelona as he scored and assisted, but Hannibal has played just 36 minutes so far.
Now the chances of Sevilla exercising their option on him have been revealed.
Sevilla rule out buying Hannibal Mejbri this summer, for now
According to a report by Spanish outlet, Estadio Deportivo, Hannibal’s nightmare start to life in Seville has caused the team to ‘rule out at this time the possibility of executing the purchase option’ of £15.3m which was agreed with United.
The report continues that the high transfer fee means it is difficult for Sevilla, and only a 180-degree turn in his performances would tempt Victor Orta and co to trigger the option.
That being said, it’s unlikely Hannibal gets much of a chance to persuade the club to change this stance, especially after Quique Sanchez Flores’ comments on him recently.
“I have tried to explain to him in the situation we are in, that it is similar to the club where they come from (Manchester United), where sacrifice is above talented virtues. Only with talent we don’t go anywhere, we need organization, desire, and desire to play. He has the conditions, but he has to understand all this.”
United should have seen this coming, Everton would’ve been a far greater choice for Hannibal
In the January window, Hannibal was said to have two choices, with Everton interested along with Sevilla. Now in hindsight, they absolutely should have insisted he be sent to Goodison Park over Sevilla.
The Sevilla director of football, Orta, is notorious for a scattergun approach with loans to see which ones stick, and so United should’ve seen this nightmare coming.
At Everton, Hannibal would be getting Premier League experience and Sean Dyche would’ve absolutely loved his qualities. A mistake which United must learn from going forward.
