Sir Alex Ferguson showed ultimate class to ex-player he never managed, Man Utd legend thought highly of him

Former Stoke City star Charlie Adam was left in awe at Sir Alex Ferguson after he reached out to the Manchester United legend and met with him in person.

Charlie Adam, who played for the likes of Liverpool, Blackpool and Rangers, retired from professional football in 2022 after his time with Scottish side Dundee.

The 38-year-old ex-Scotland midfielder took his first steps into coaching after his career and took up the role of head coach at Fleetwood Town in December 2023.

Adam has been in charge of seven league matches for Fleetwood Town so far, with the ex-Liverpool and Stoke man picking up two wins, one draw and four defeats.

The former Scotland international had previously worked as a loans player manager at Burnley, as well as serving as assistant manager for Burnley Under-21s.

Sir Alex Ferguson thought highly of Adam during his playing career and the Fleetwood Town boss was all too familiar playing against Manchester United.

With Adam taking his first steps into management last year, he took the opportunity to reach out to Ferguson and the Scotsman showed true class with what he did.

Adam on meeting Man Utd legend Ferguson

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Charlie Adam revealed that he had sent an email to Sir Alex Ferguson in 2023 and the Manchester United legend responded to him.

Ferguson, who called it time on his legendary career in 2013, extended an invitation for Adam to come and visit him at his house and shared some advice with him.

The 82-year-old legendary Scotsman urged Adam “not to pick fights” with his players and told him to be himself as a manager.

Adam was in awe at the “unbelievable” experience and hilariously wanted the car to break down on the way to the station so he could spend more time with Ferguson.

“Last year, I emailed Sir Alex Ferguson and he invited me over to his house,” he told the newspaper.

“More than anything, he told me to be myself and not to pick fights with the players.

“It was unbelievable — I was almost hoping the car broke down when he drove me back to the station so I could spend more time with him.”

Ferguson talked up Adam’s impact

Ferguson famously praised fellow countryman Adam after United’s 3-2 win over Blackpool in 2011.

Adam had been linked with a move away from Blackpool at the time and the Scottish former midfielder played a key part in his side’s eventual defeat to United.

He set up ex-teammates Craig Cathcart and DJ Campbell from first-half corners, with Ferguson memorably saying that Adam’s corners were worth £10m alone.

“We were deep in the mire in the first half,” Ferguson said at the time.

“We just couldn’t handle Charlie Adam’s free-kicks and corners.”

He added: “We were all over the place. His [Adam] corner kicks are worth £10m in themselves.

“The boy is an incredible striker of the ball.”
