Speculation regarding a potential return to Ajax is ongoing for Donny van de Beek with the Manchester United misfit not part of Erik ten Hag’s plans at the Premier League giants.
The Dutch international joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan during the January transfer window in a rather desperate attempt to jump-start his stalling career.
But it’s fair to say that – with Frankfurt boss Dino Toppmoller admitting that Donny van de Beek is struggling to play even 70 minutes of football due to his lack of match fitness – Manchester United’s £34 million forgotten man is yet to rediscover the form that made him such a key part of Ajax’s success under Erik ten Hag.
It is almost five years now since Van de Beek put Ajax on the brink of the Champions League final. And, with Van de Beek’s £13 million purchase clause likely to go un-triggered by Frankfurt on current form, reporter Mike Verweij feels that a step back could also be a step forwards for the Ajax academy graduate.

“Maybe he is the same kind of player as a lot of Bodo/Glimt players,” Verweij tells De Telegraaf, highlighting the struggles of many players who left the Norwegian giants and failed to make an impression elsewhere.
“They only function there, and that may apply to (Van de Beek) at Ajax. Maybe he doesn’t need to be as fit in the Eredivisie as in the Bundesliga or Premier League.
“If he is fit and if Ajax takes the time to prepare him, then it might not be such a crazy signing. (Although) there would have to be a kind of rehabilitation process, because Van de Beek has not played for a long time.”

Van de Beek has just over one year left on his Man United contract. The 26-year-old, who has only started a handful of Premier League games for the Red Devils, is one of a number of high-earning players likely to be cut adrift by Ineos as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to trim down an eye-watering wage bill.
