Where Manchester United are now likely to finish this season as Champions League possibility dwindles

Manchester United and their Premier League season is slowly drawing to a close – and it hasn’t exactly gone to plan.

With Erik ten Hag finishing in 3rd last season, the expectations were mightily high for United fans heading into the new campaign.

It has been somewhat underwhelming. Aside from the FA Cup dream which is still firmly alive, the Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League group stages, failed any sort of fight in their Carabao Cup defence and currently sit 6th in the Premier League.

This leaves them way off the top four spots. So where are they likely to finish? Is it still possible to qualify for the Champions League?

Manchester United’s remaining Premier League fixtures this season and points possibility

As of the 11th of March, Manchester United have eight fixtures remaining in the Premier League season. Here is how many points we think they’ll obtain for each.

Fixture: Prediction:
Bournemouth vs Manchester United +1
Manchester United vs Sheffield United +3
Manchester United vs Burnley +3
Crystal Palace vs Manchester United +3
Manchester United vs Arsenal +0
Manchester United vs Newcastle United +3
Brighton and Hove Albion vs Manchester United +1
Total: 14

With Manchester United currently sitting at 49 points – this would mean United finish the season on 63 points. How would that leave them in the Premier League table?

Manchester United’s remaining fixtures against Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur

The teams Manchester United will have to surpass are Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. They currently sit like so around the Red Devils:

Here are their remaining fixtures and how we also think they’ll get on:

Tottenham Fixture: Prediction: Aston Villa Fixture: Prediction:
Newcastle vs Tottenham +3 Arsenal vs Aston Villa +0
Tottenham vs Arsenal +0 Aston Villa vs Bournemouth +3
Chelsea vs Tottenham +1 Aston Villa vs Chelsea +3
Liverpool vs Tottenham +0 Brighton vs Aston Villa +1
Tottenham vs Burnley +3 Aston Villa vs Liverpool +0
Tottenham vs Man City +0 Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa +3

With our predictions – this is how the race for the top four would finish up.

Not even close.

Is Champions League football still possible for Manchester United?

Whilst it’s still mathematically possible – it’s more improbable for Manchester United.

Ten Hag’s side have dropped far too many points in crucial moments this season, and will not be able to climb the deficit needed for a place in Europe’s greatest knockout competition.

Another year of the Europa League anthem on Thursday nights surely awaits. Sigh.
