Man Utd legend Roy Keane dropped cryptic hint at his ‘true’ reaction to England’s defeat to Spain in Euro 2024 final

Manchester United legend Roy Keane hinted at how he reacted to England suffering a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 in Germany.

Roy Keane was on punditry duties for ITV alongside former Manchester United teammate Gary Neville for the broadcaster’s coverage of this summer’s Euros.

England punched their ticket to the final of Euro 2024 after a 2-1 comeback win against the Netherlands in the semi-finals last week.

However, the Three Lions fell short in their second consecutive European Championship tournament, with Spain lifting the Henri Delaunay trophy.

England were one of the tournament favourites ahead of Euro 2024, but the Three Lions struggled to impress with their performances under Gareth Southgate.

Spain, on the other hand, completed their Euro 2024 campaign undefeated and won all seven of their matches under manager Luis de la Fuente.

The 2024 Euro champions knocked out host nation Germany in the quarter-finals before defeating tournament favourites France in the semi-finals.

Keane’s reaction to Euro 2024 final

Speaking on the Stick to Football show, ITV pundit Roy Keane opened the episode alongside Manchester United legend Gary Neville in the aftermath of Euro 2024.

Neville wasted no time in asking the former United captain about the time he went to bed, with Keane admitting it was “about half two, three” when he hit the sack.

The former England and United defender was stunned and pushed back on Keane, who cryptically hinted at what he was doing at that time of the night.

“[I was] chatting, Gary… being sociable,” Keane said.

However, a member of the production team off-camera bravely asked Keane if he had been “celebrating” Spain’s victory over England in the Euro 2024 final.

Keane responded by smirking and chuckling to himself, with the United legend neither confirming nor denying that he had been ‘celebrating’ the result.

Keane’s reaction to Spain win

Spain were overlooked among the tournament favourites and were simply too much for England to handle on Sunday evening at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Keane made it clear that the “best team” won the final and praised the “excellent” performance from Spain.

“The best team won tonight and the best team won the tournament,” he said on ITV.

“They’ve got a lovely mix, they’ve got pace, they’ve got youth, they’ve got experience. They’ve got talent and have worked their socks off.

Keane added: “What they [England] lacked tonight is quality. They’ve lacked quality maybe throughout the tournament, probably that fight and desire, options off the bench that got them to the final.

“But when you’re watching it, and again I’ve always said top-level sport is brutal, it really is.

“We [as ex-players] have lost big games. Sometimes the opposition are just better than you. Spain were excellent. We’re talking about options off the bench, those boys [have] done okay. They deserved it. To win seven games in a row, that’s amazing.

“Again, in sport, you have to step back and be humble. It’s great to win but also say, ‘Listen, we’ve been beaten by the better team,’ take your medicine and regroup and go again.”
